TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Six Javan hawk-eagles were spotted around the slopes of Mt. Merapi in Boyolali, Central Java. "The spotted hawk-eagles are in their teenage period. They are able to fly, but not smoothly," Mt. Merapi National Park (TNGM) ecosystem controller official Dhani Suryawan said in Sleman on Saturday (12/8).
They were spotted in a monitoring activity carried out by TNGM last year. Dhani added that the next monitoring will be performed from September to October this year. Just as last year, the method of simultaneous observation will be implemented, Dani continued. He explained that simultaneous observation will be carried out from all sides at the same time.
Last year, the team was divided into six teams, he explained, and the team consisted of TNGM officials and a number of organizations such as Jogja Bird Watchers Community (PPBJ). Dhani went on by saying that in addition to Javan hawk-eagle, other eagle species thrive in the slopes of Mt. Merapi including Black eagle, Changeable hawk-eagle (brontok), Crested Serpent eagle (bido), and Oriental Honey Buzzard (sikep madu).
"It is just that compared to other species, Javan hawk-eagle has slow growth in population, so it requires constant monitoring. It only lays one egg and only once in a year," he said.
