TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nam Air has opened a new flight route between Biak and Nabire using ATR 72-600 Turboprop aircraft with a capacity of 72 passengers in a bid to improve connectivity between Papuan cities.
“The government is stepping up development in Papua and we want to participate in the development by opening a new flight route, among others,” Sriwijaya Group Commercial Director Toto Nursatyo told the media today after opening the new route at Frans Kaisiepo Airport in Biak, Papua.
He said that the new route is critical and strategic to cut cost and reduce air travel time between the two cities.
Moreover, he said, passengers from the two cities wanting to continue their journey to Sulawesi or Java will not have to spend their night at the airport anymore because the flights to the two islands are now available.
“We already know that plane tickets in Papua are pricey. The new flight route will help make it cheaper as it offers an alternative,” he said.
Starting today, Nam Air, a subsidiary of Sriwijaya Air, also serves other new routes in eastern Indonesia regions, namely Nabire-Jayapura v.v. and Jayapura-Dekai v.v.
