TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Police spokesperson General Setyo Wasisto said that one of the suspects responsible for the North Sumatra police headquarter attack, Syawaluddin Pakpahan, had fought for ISIS in Syria.
“We have monitored Syawaluddin Pakpahan for a while. He spent some time fighting in Syria a few years ago,” Setyo said today.
Authorities confiscated an ISIS flag and books. Setyo said that the findings were essential in exposing which radical group the suspect belonged to.
Three suspects have been taken to Jakarta to be questioned by National Police’s Special Detachment 88 anti-terrorist squad.
The suspects are Syawaluddin Pakpahan (43), Firmansyah Putra Yudi (32), and Boboy (17). Another suspect Ardial Ramadhana was shot dead during the attack.
Setyo added that police are currently investigating whether there are other suspects involved in the attack.
The attack launched against the North Sumatra Police Headquarter took place on the early morning of Sunday, June 25. The terrorists, unfortunately, killed a police officer, Adjutant Inspector Martua Sigalingging.
