TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Justice and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly has confirmed the reports that Cipinang Prison has luxury cells. He said that he has signed a letter approving the dismissal of the prison ward and the head of Correctional Facility's Security Unit (KPLP).
The PDIP politician said that the prison ward had claimed not to be aware of the luxury cells. Yasonna doubted the claim. “It’s not right. It means that the ward did not perform their duties and functions,” he said.

Yasonna said that he will question those involved in providing luxurious facilities to inmates. “There will be harsh sanctions. And will be transferred far, far away,” he said.
He expects the Justice Ministry local offices to carry out regular inspections. Yasonna said that the Ministry had searched Cipinang Prison three months ago but did not find any luxurious cell.
In late May, the National Antinarcotics Agency (BNN) searched a prison cell occupied by a man called Haryanto Chandra in Cipinang Prison. The Agency found five mobile phones, a passbook, a laptop, a CCTV and a modem. BNN officers also found that an air conditioner was installed in the cell.
Haryanto is an inmate of Cipinang Prison class IA who has been sentenced to 14 years in prison in a drug case. He is believed to be a member of a ring led by drug kingpin Freddy Budiman.
Yasonna admits that many prison guards have failed to perform their duties. Some even accept bribes to set up luxury cells. Moreover, cases of extortion are often found. “I have said it before, there will be no compromise. Harsh action will be taken immediately, in the event of bribery, etc. I will leave them to the police,” he said.
