Seaweed Price in NTT Drops

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of seaweed farmers in Nembrala village, West Rote sub-district, Rote Ndoa regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) reported that the price of seaweed in the region had drastically dropped.
According to them, the decline of seaweed price has lasted for the last two months. In the previous months, the price of dried seaweed was Rp15,000 per kilogram. However, the price then dropped to Rp7,000 per kilogram and now it is only Rp1,000 per kg.
In the meantime, the price of dried seaweed dropped from Rp20,000 into Rp12,000 and now it is priced at Rp7,000 per kg.
One of the local farmers, Yane Balu, said that the price of seaweed was determined by buyers from Surabaya.
"When there is price fluctuation, seaweed farmers in Rote are also affected,” Yane said.
Yane said that a number of farmers chose to keep the seaweed by not selling them to retailers He added that they chose to wait the price goes back to normal. However, other farmers chose to sell dried seaweed because they needed money.
