TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The e-sport exhibition event at the 2018 Asian Games in August this year is set to expand to the 2019 SEA Games scheduled to be held in Manila, Philippines.
The e-sport is one of the ‘category 3’ sports submitted by the Philippines South East Asian Games Organizing Committee (PhilSGOC) to be included in the Southeast Asian sporting event other than Jiu-Jitsu, lawn bowling, and netball.
The difference in the 2019 SEA Games is that the e-sport category will no longer be an exhibition, but an official sporting class. This means that e-sport athletes will fight for medals and contribute to a country’s overall medal tally.
Chairman of the Indonesia e-Sports Association (IeSPA), Eddy Lim welcomed the news positively and is optimistic that Indonesian athletes will be able to perform well in 2019’s SEA Games e-sports event, even though the game that is yet to be officially named and competed in the sporting event is Mobile Legends.
