List of Recommendations from the Symposium on 1965 Tragedy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The second day of National Symposium to Dissect 1965 Tragedy on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, had discussed solutions to reveal the bloody events and to help the victims. A number of speakers had given a number of recommendations. Some are similiar, some are different. Listed below are recommendations gathered by Tempo.

1. Kumala Candrakirana (Coalition for Justice and Revelation of Truth)

Recommendations:

- Improve the integrity of law enforcers

- Rehabilitation of dignity of and compensation for victims by the government

- Government’s recognition of the revelation of truth

- Victims to participate to seek solutions

- Policy revamp in relation to resolution of human rights cases

- Reconciliation and revelation of truth

2. Harry Wibowo (Human Rights Activist)

- Evaluation on the failure of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) and the Attorney General Office to resolve the case of 1965

- Revelation of failed investigations for public review

- Establish Truth and Reconciliation Committee with clear legal basis

3. Harkristuti Harkrisnowo (Human Rights Activist)

- Reconciliation as complementary legal action

- Not to position reconciliation as settlement of dispute

- Reconciliation and revelation of truth

4. Mahar Agusno (Human Rights Case Victim)

- Fulfill the needs of victims of human rights cases, including psychological treatment

- Guarantee the sense of security of victims to seek a peaceful life

- Establish health agency for victims alienated in remote regions

5. Galuh Wandita (Human Rights Activist, Director of Asia Justice and Rights)

- Establish Truth and Reconciliation Committee

- Involve victims in the process to seek solutions

- Gather victims’ testimonies

- Rehabilitate the victims, both material and immaterial losses

- Reform the judicial system

- Not to restrict victims’ rights to seek justice

6. Baskara T Wardaya (Human Rights Activist, Sanata Dharma University)

- Reconciliation to be followed up by revelation of truth

- Involve as many parties as possible in reconciliation process

7. Sidarto Danusubroto (Member of Presidential Advisory Board/Wantimpres, Organizer of the Symposium)

- Hold a symposium at national level

- Allow regions to hold similar symposiums

- The state to admit its involvement in 1965 tragedy

- The state to ensure the security of symposiums on 1965 tragedy held in regions
