TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti said that the Police is ready to investigate the alleged irregularities that have caused several staple food prices to increase. There are seven companies suspected to be involved in manipulating food prices.
We will conduct an investigation," Badrodin said on Monday, August 10, 2015.
Badrodin said that actions by the suspected companies have caused the country to rely heavily on imported foods, whereas domestic supplies, according to records in several ministries, are still adequate.
Badrodin however, refused to mention the names of the companies involved in the cartel business.
Increasing food prices have occurred in a number of traditional markets in several regions. Some of the foods that experienced price hike include beef. High beef prices since Eid al-Fitr have prompted beef vendors to go on strike.
Beef vendors claimed that the increasing price was caused by a lack of beef supply as a result of import quota limitation by the government. However, on the other hand, the government claimed that beef stocks are adequate.
