Govt to Supply Additional Meat Stock

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government is determined to lower meat prices in markets toward Eid.  The Ministry of Agriculture is ready tosupply additional meat stocks in order to suppress price surge.

“With the existing stock, prices should be under Rp100,000.  Above that is unreasonable,” Investment Field Expert Staff the Ministry of Agriculture Syukur Iwantoro told Tempo on Sunday, July 12.

Currently, the averagae beef prices in Jakarta rages between Rp100,000 to Rp120,000 per kilogram, whereas its ideal prices are between Rp85,000 to Rp90,000 per kilogram.

The Agriculture Ministry and the Logistics Agency have performed market operations to suppress prices.  The ministry also plans to help lower prices by supplying meat from its warehouse to the market.  “For today (Sunday), the ministry is ready to circulate 10 tons of meat to markets.”

Next, 30 tons of meat is periodically scheduled to be release to increase stocks in markets.  There are 100 cows ready to be cut daily at Berdikari slaughterhouse.

“We are prepared to supply any meat demanded, including square meat and others.  We are coordinating with the Logistics Agency also,” said the former Director General of Livestock and Animal Health.

Syukur urges every State-Owned Enterprise that provides meat (Berdikari and Logistics Agency) to cooperate in the distribution to the public. This is so that the people could enjoy meat with affordable prices.
