TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned company PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur is developing a fertilizer plant that is claimed to be the largest producer of ammonia and urea in Asia-Pacific.  The installed production capacity of this plant is expected to reach 850,000 ton of ammonia and 1.15 million ton of urea per year.

The target is to make this plant the largest ammonia and urea producer in Asia-Pacific, Industry Minister Saleh Husein said after visiting the opening preparation of Kaltim-5 plant in Bontang, East Kalimantan (Kaltim), last week.  President Joko “Jokowi“ Widodo is scheduled to officially open the plant.

This plant, Saleh said, has a huge advantage, located near the natural resources natural gas LNG Badak in Bontang.  he expects ammonia and urea fertilizer could become the magnet of industry and investment, especially the petrochemical area in eastern Indonesia.

East Kalimantan build Kaltim-5 in East Kalimantan Industrial Estate, Bontang, with an investment value ofRp 1.85 trillion and US $474.5 million.  The activity in the plant has started since January 2015 and the production capacity is aimed to continue to increase up to 850,000ton of ammonia and 1.15 million ton of urea per year.

East Kalimantan Fertilizer CEO Aas Asikin Idat said Kaltim-5 is just entering a demonstation test and performance test phase.  If it goes well, the trial test is scheduled to start June 22-26, while the performance test will be in June 27 until July 11, 2015.

Outside of Kaltim-5, the factory has five factories with a total capacity of 2.51 million ton of ammonia and 2.98 million ton of urea per year. Once Kaltim-5 have fully operated, the total production capacity of urea will elevate to be 3.4 million ton per year or up by about 15 percent. from the production capacity of urea, Kaltim fertilizer will be donating in order to meet the domestic fertilizer need about 40 percent of the national production capacity of urea reaching 8.5 million ton.

Other Kaltim fertilizer plant is a coal boiler and warehousing.  The plant also produce two types of fertilizers, NPK Fuse with a capacity of 200,000 ton and NPK Blendng with a capacity of 150,000 ton each year.  “We will also develop NPK Cluster plant in collaboration with Jordan Phospate Mines Co,” said Aas.  The production capacity of NPK Cluster is 2x500,000 ton per year, he added.
