TEMPO.CO, Washington, D.C - US legislators have agreed to arm Syrian rebels to combat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
The House of Representatives, Wednesday, voted 273 to 156 to support President Barack Obama’s policy to train and equip the rebels.
Some Democrats said the policy could open the door for the US military's intervention in the Middle East. Conservative members are concerned that the plan falls short of what is needed to the defeat ISIS.
Even though the House has endorsed the move, the program must be passed by the Congress.
President Obama needs to deliver his thoughts about military intervention in Syria in order to put an end to ISIS in front of Congress although the White House and some US politicians believe that Obama has the authority to launch airstrikes in Syria, as what he has done in Iraq.
White House spokesman John Boehner praised the voting by the House, saying that the move is an important step to defeat ISIS.
