TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta provincial government is expected to manage the city garbage. Head of Jakarta Sanitary Agency, Saptastri Ediningtyas, said the plan would be materialized by 2016. "So we are going to focus on the waste management within the city first," Saptasari said yesterday.
Saptasari added that the plan would be realized by adding more temporary garbage disposal facilities (TPST). This year, the Agency also plans on adding three more TPSTs in three sub-districts to be used to accommodate the garbage.
"The three regions are Jati sub-district (East Jakarta), Kebon Pala sub-district (East Jakarta), and Palmerah sub-district (West Jakarta)," she said.
According to her, it is expected that those new TPSTs would reduce a number of garbage dumped from Jakarta to Bekasi.
Currently, Jakarta residents produce around 6,500 tons of garbage every day and 5,000 of it are dumped in Bantargebang, Bekasi. Meanwhile, the new TPSTs are expected to reduce the amount of garbage by 2,000 tons.
"So, waste management can be done starting at sub-district level," said Saptastri.
The agency would focus on waste management in traditional markets since the markets are seen as the biggest sources of garbage.
"If we have 153 traditional markets and their own TPSTs, the amount of garbage can be reduced and processed first," she said.
With the launch of Pesanggrahan TPST, Saptastri said the TPST is expected to accommodate around 50 tons of garbages in South Jakarta. TPST has also become the biggest garbage management place administered by the Jakarta provincial government.
Today, the Sanitary Agency manages 20 TPSTs, which can manage 170 tons of garbage per day.
Regarding the target, South Jakarta Mayor, Syamsuddin Noer, said she was ready to help the program. The government had even prepared land to be used as a waste management place, he added. "There's a 2.2-hectare of land in Jagakarsa to be used as a TPST."
