TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A way has opened for Chinese tennis player Li Na to sit on the world third place. If this will come true, Li Na will be the first highest ranked Asian tennis player after Japanese Kimiko Date Krumm who sat on the world fourth place in 1995.
Li Na reached the semifinals of the WTA Championships with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on Friday over Victoria Azarenka, who was wincing in pain from a back injury that brought her to tears. Li Na's victory carried her to the last four of the tour's flagship tournament for the first time.
The fourth-seeded Li will play against 2011 champion Petra Kvitova, who rallied past Angelique Kerber 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-3 in the season-ending tournament that features the top eight players in the world. Another victory on Saturday will make her the first Chinese player to ever climb as high as number three in the world.
