TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, said the development of Nusantara Airport construction at the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) is “quite significant.”
For example, the minister said, the runway construction has reached 1,975 meters as of Sunday, September 8, 2024. “This is still according to target. We will complete 2,200 meters soon,” the minister said in a statement received in Jakarta, on Monday, September 9, 2024.
At the end of August 2024, the runway was still 1,025 meters long. Construction continues to progress rapidly through drizzly and rainy weather.
In addition to the runway, the Ministry of Transportation also said several infrastructures in the airport have seen progress. This includes the VVIP terminal, with 90.16 percent completed compared to August 2024 with 82.6 percent. Meanwhile, the VIP terminal has been completed by 77.06 percent.
Next, the supporting facilities such as the ATC tower as of Sunday have completed 53.71 percent, the administration and operational buildings have completed 61.03 percent, and the PKP-PK Building has completed 68.71 percent.
"The construction is going well thus far. The unpredictable weather slowed down the work, but everything is still on track," said the Minister of Transportation.
As for the supporting roads for airport access, the main access road is 98.53 percent completed, the western perimeter road is 66.96 percent completed, and the eastern perimeter road is 50.44 percent completed. All of these roads will later support access to and from the airport.
Overall, the Ministry of Transportation noted that the progress of the airport construction has reached 74.79 percent with a construction time of 273 days.
Minister Budi is also optimistic that the airport construction will finish on schedule, namely on December 31, 2024.
Previously, President Joko Widodo or Jokowi waited for the Nusantara Airport to be ready for operations before confirming that he would move to IKN.
"Look at the conditions on the ground, there are many incomplete infrastructures. For example, the airport,” said President Jokowi when giving a press statement after inaugurating the Maternal and Child Health Service Building of the Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta on Wednesday, August 28.
