TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia had just won the title of Asia's Leading Adventure Tourism Destination at the 2024 World Travel Awards held Tuesday, September 3, 2024 in Manila, Philippines.

This title was previously awarded to Japan, Thailand, and Sri Lanka in previous years in turn.

This year, the other countries nominated for the Leading Adventure Travel Destinations in Asia category are China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

The World Travel Awards recognizes countries for excellence in various sectors of the tourism industry. The awards are presented annually based on votes from travel industry professionals and the general public.

Indonesia's Adventure Tourism Advantages

Thanks to its geographical location, Indonesia offers an incredible wealth of nature. From majestic active volcanoes to lush tropical forests, and beautiful coral reefs in the ocean, these are all major attractions for adventure travelers.

The characteristics and experiences of each adventure attraction vary from place to place, from trekking in the mountains like Rinjani, to white water rafting in the swift rivers of Borneo. Komodo Island even offers a rare experience with conservation tourism, where tourists can see Komodo dragons in their natural habitat.

The diverse experiences and sensations presented through this adventure tourism are an advantage in the eyes of challenge-loving tourists.

Destination Development Targets Foreign Tourists

Indonesia not only relies on its natural beauty, but also continues to innovate in developing authentic adventure tourism experiences. Currently, global travel agents are contributing to promoting adventure tourism in Indonesia.

Quoted from Antara, international travel agency Interpid Travel focuses on direct interaction with local communities and traditional lodging. They are targeting an increase in the number of tourists to 20,000 people by 2030 and 4,000 tourists by 2024, with special tours in Sulawesi, Raja Ampat, Kalimantan, and Flores.

Interpid Travel puts the potential revenue from adventure tourism at US$1.3 billion and one percent of the proceeds will be set aside for sustainable tourism, including addressing climate change challenges.
