TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Though his special staff for political communication Daniel Sparingga, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono stated that the brutal murder of four inmates of Cebongan prison in Sleman is a direct attack on the authority of the state. The killing, he said, has also poses a serious threat to public safety.
"The attack also devastated the people's trust in this republic's law supremacy," Daniel said through a text message, Tuesday, March 26.
On Saturday morning, March 23, the Cebongan Penitentiary in Sleman, Yogyakarta was attacked by dozens of gun-toting men. Four prisoners were killed and two guards were wounded.
The dead victims, Hendrik Angel Sahetapi aka Deki; Adrianus Candra Galaga; Yohanes Juan Mambait, and Gameliel Yermiayanto Rohi Riwu, were suspects of an assault on a Special Forces (Kopassus) member that lead to his death.
There are suspicions that the attack was an act of retaliation for the death of a Kopassus member. To date, the police are still investigating the incident.
