Ternate Flash Flood Death Toll Rises to 16; 60 Families Evacuated

TEMPO.CO, Ternate - The Ternate City Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) reported an increase in the death toll from the flash floods to 16 people, up from the previous count of 14. The disaster, triggered by heavy rainfall over the past few days, occurred in Rua Village on Sunday morning, August 25, 2024.
The Head of the Ternate City Basarnas, Fathur Rahman, detailed that the victims included both men and women, with five children aged 10 or younger, five individuals aged 14-23, and the remaining victims over 41 years old. All victims have been identified and handed over to their families for burial.
In addition, nine people were injured, and three residents remained missing. “The flood also caused severe damage to 25 houses and 1 mosque. The evacuation process is still ongoing,” he said on Monday, August 26, 2024.
Meanwhile, the Emergency Response Post Coordinator, Rizal Marsaoly, revealed that at least 60 families had been evacuated from the flash flood disaster location in Rua Village. According to Rizal, they were residents directly affected by the flash flood on Sunday morning.
“There were 60 families affected. A total of seven families were evacuated to the main post in Kastela Village, while the remaining 53 families sought refuge with relatives,” he added.
According to Rizal, based on the reports received, two locations have been designated for evacuation, namely the State Vocational School (SMK) 4 building in Ternate City and the elementary school building in Kastela Village, Pulau Ternate District. These two locations are available to accommodate displaced residents.
