Jokowi to Host Pope Francis in Jakarta Palace on September 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo will receive a visit from Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic community, at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, on September 4, 2024. Head of State Protocol Andy Rachmianto said the Vatican head of state will arrive in the country one day before meeting Jokowi.
Andy stated that the government will prepare an official state ceremony for Pope Francis before the meeting with Jokowi at the Merdeka Palace. He added that there will also be other activities between the two leaders at the State Palace on the same day.
“The specific topics of discussion are still being finalized by the Vatican, the Palace, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” said Andy during a press conference at the Palace in Jakarta on Monday, August 26, 2024.
In his statement, Andy mentioned that Pope Francis' visit to Indonesia will not only focus on state affairs but also on religious matters. Therefore, Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas will accompany Jokowi during the meeting.
Pope Francis' series of visits to Indonesia will continue until September 6, 2024. On September 5, he will attend a grand mass at the Gelora Bung Karno Complex. Additionally, other events will take place at the Jakarta Cathedral Church in collaboration with the Istiqlal Mosque.
Pope Francis' apostolic journey to the Asia Pacific region will not be limited to Indonesia. During the same period, the Catholic leader will also visit Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and Singapore, concluding on September 13, 2024.
As quoted from the official website of the Archdiocese of Jakarta, the major cities that Pope Francis will visit include Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea) from September 6 to 9, 2024; Dili (Timor Leste) from September 9 to 11, 2024; and Singapore from September 11 to 13, 2024.
