TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has submitted 34 energy transition projects to the ASEAN Zero Emission Community (AZEC) to secure funding from Japan, said Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

"Indonesia has the largest shortlist, comprising 34 projects. The projects included in the ASEAN Zero Emission Community are those managed by Indonesia and Japan," he said at the AZEC 2nd Ministerial Meeting in Jakarta.

In 2024, at least 78 projects have been submitted to AZEC by member countries, which include Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, and Australia, he added.

According to Airlangga, among the proposed projects, there are commercial projects that are ready to be implemented, including the Muara Laboh geothermal project and the Legok Nangka Waste Power Plant.

There are also potential projects that are ready to be commercialized, but are still at the feasibility study stage, such as the peatland management project and the Java-Sumatra transmission network project.

In addition, he revealed that there are a number of memorandums of understanding (MoU) and initiatives that need to be identified and studied further.

Last year, Indonesia submitted 120 energy transition projects to AZEC, as per data provided by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

"From last year's (projects), those that entered pipeline (queue) 1 include the geothermal project (in Muara Laboh) and the Legok Nangka Waste Power Plant," the ministry's director general of new, renewable energy and energy conservation, Eniya Listiani Dewi, said on a separate occasion.

AZEC is part of an emission reduction initiative introduced by the Prime Minister of Japan during COP26 in Glasgow. It was officially launched at the G20 Summit in 2022 by President Joko Widodo and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
