Exports in Creative Economy Sector Records Over US$12bn in 2024's First Half, Ministry Reports

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesia's creative economy sector showed a solid performance in the first half of 2024, recording a 55.65 percent surge led by the fashion, culinary, and craft industries. 

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy’s main expert, Nia Niscaya, conveyed the statement during the online ‘Weekly Brief with Sandi Uno’ on Monday, August 12, 2024.

Nia also reported that creative economy exports in the first half of 2024 achieved a significant feat of US$12.36 billion, or 44.89 percent of this year’s target. This reflects a 4.46 percent rise compared to the same period last year. “Based on the commodities, the export value is dominated by the fashion, culinary, and craft industries,” she said. 

Based on the data received by Tempo, the ministry noted that the fashion industry came out on top with an expert contribution of US$6.76 billion. The craft industry, comprised of products such as furniture, decoration, and accessories, contributed US$4.75 billion while culinary contributed US$829.66 million. The growing publishing industry is responsible for US$6.15 million in export value. 

Creative economy exports in Indonesia have five main destination countries; the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, and India. The United States remains the largest market for Indonesian creative economy products, while India is a first-time entry to the top five list. 

Indonesia’s creative economy sector is also expected to grow in terms of GDP contribution. The government set an Rp1,347 trillion target of added value this year, with the first half of 2024 already seeing an Rp278.64 trillion. The number consisted of fashion at Rp128.1 trillion, culinary at Rp321.36 trillion, and crafts at Rp102.44 trillion.

Creative economy workers also recorded a slight increase this year, reaching 22.74 million by the end of 2024 as opposed to last year’s 22.59 million. 

Considering the positive achievement in the creative economy sector, Nia said she’s optimistic that the industry will continue to grow and become an important pillar of the national economy.
