Jakarta High Court Grants Prosecutor's Appeal in Syahrul Yasin Limpo's Corruption Case

10 September 2024 14:03 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Jakarta High Court granted the appeal of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Prosecutor against the district court ruling of former Minister of Agriculture, Syahrul Yasin Limpo, or SYL. The Jakarta Corruption Court sentenced SYL to 12 years in prison and a Rp500 million fine subsidiary to 4 months imprisonment.

The High Court verdict was harsher than the district court ruling, which sentenced the former minister to 10 years in prison and a Rp300 million fine subsidiary to 4 months in imprisonment. SYL was also sentenced to pay Rp14 billion and US$30,000 worth of compensation.

"Declaring that Syahrul Yasin Limpo has, beyond reasonable doubt, been proven guilty of committing a criminal act of corruption as charged by the prosecutor," said Chief Judge of the Jakarta High Court, Artha Theresia, in the appeal hearing of the SYL case, Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

The judge also ruled that SYL must pay Rp44.2 billion and US$ 30,000 in compensation. The compensation must be paid no later than a month after the decision is enforced. Failure to meet the required figure will lead to a substitute of five years in prison.

In the corruption case, SYL was proven to have collected levies from Ministry of Agriculture officials totaling Rp44.2 billion and US$30,000 for personal needs.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta High Court decided to increase SYL’s sentence because the district court ruling was considered a failure to bring the former minister to justice. Moreover, SYL was a state official who ought to set an example in state administration.

Syahrul Yasin Limpo was proven to have violated Article 12 letter e in conjunction with Article 18 of Corruption Law Number 31 of 1999 in conjunction with Article 55 Paragraph (1) point 1 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) in conjunction with Article 64 Paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code.
