TEMPO.CO, JakartaMice and rats are often feared for their destructive habits and for spreading disease. Rats and other rodents are known to spread up to 35 diseases to humans, including leptospirosis. One way to keep them out of the house is to use odors they don't like.

With their highly sensitive sense of smell, mice and rats tend to avoid certain scents that may bother them. Below is a list of odors that mice and rats don't like to help keep homes rodent-free.

  1. Soursop leaves

Soursop leaves have a distinctive and rather strong odor. Rats and mice don't like this smell because it can irritate the rat's sense of smell. To use soursop leaves as a rodent repellent, take a bunch of fresh leaves, crush them, and place them in areas frequented by mice, such as corners of rooms or near their entry points.

  1. Durian peel

Durian is world famous for having a very strong and putrid odor, and the skin is no exception. The stench of durian skin is considered very annoying to rats because of its intensity and uniqueness. Place dried durian skin around the area you want to protect from mice.

  1. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is one of the best-known natural mouse repellents because mice don't like the strong menthol smell of peppermint. Add a few drops of peppermint oil to a cotton ball or small cloth and place it in areas frequented by mice, such as corners of rooms, kitchens, or storage rooms.

  1. Garlic

Garlic has a strong odor that rats and mice hate. To repel them, place fresh garlic or garlic powder around areas that may become their nests, or mix garlic powder with water and spray the solution in areas frequented by these rodents.

  1. Vinegar

Vinegar is a kitchen ingredient that has a strong, sour smell that mice and rats don't like. To use vinegar as a repellent, mix white vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio, then spray this solution on areas where mice frequently pass. You can also soak cotton balls in vinegar and place them in strategic locations.

  1. Chili powder

Red chili powder has a spicy aroma and flavor that repels mice and rats. Sprinkle chili powder in areas frequented by mice or around holes and crevices where they can enter the home. Be careful not to get chili powder in the eye or on the skin.

  1. Camphor

Camphor is known to be effective in repelling mice because of its pungent odor. To prevent mice and rats from entering your home, try placing several camphor balls in places such as closets, storage areas, or under the sink. The rodents will feel uncomfortable and stay away because of the strong smell of camphor.

  1. Cinnamon

Cinnamon has a strong, warm aroma that rodents dislike. Sprinkle cinnamon powder around areas where mice may nest, or mix cinnamon powder with water and spray the solution in areas frequented by mice and rats.
