TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy (KSAL) Admiral Muhammad Ali held a meeting with Vice President Ma'ruf Amin at the Vice Presidential Secretariat Office in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. The meeting focused on a range of topics related to maritime security in Indonesia.
One key point of discussion was the government's initiative to establish a mid-ocean rest area within the waters of the Sunda Strait. “The Vice President talked about the possibility of building a marine rest area in the Sunda Strait, especially in Banten,” said Ali in a video statement posted on the Vice President’s YouTube channel on July 24, 2024.
He elaborated on the potential benefits of such a rest area, highlighting its positive impact on Indonesia's maritime access, economic interests, and national defense and security.
He also presented the Navy's plans to construct a one-stop service facility on Nipa Island in the Riau Islands. This facility is intended to streamline maritime trade activities passing through the Malacca Strait.
“He (Ma'ruf Amin) also conveyed the condition of the waters in the Malacca Strait, especially in Batam waters,” he added.
In addition to maritime security, the meeting touched upon preparations for the upcoming Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) anniversary celebration, which was planned to be held in Surabaya. “The committee will also involve fleets under the ranks of the Indonesian Navy,” he stated.
