1. Indonesian Police Seize 394 Packages of Marijuana Belongs to Papua-Papua New Guinea Kingpin
The Papua police arrested three suspected drug smugglers, believed to belong to a Papua-Papua New Guinea (PNG) kingpin, during a raid in Jayapura District, Papua, on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.
Local cops seized 394 packages of marijuana from the suspects, identified as NJDM, IT, and TT, Chief of the Papua Police's Narcotics Directorate, Senior Commissioner Alfian, stated on Saturday, July 20, 2024.
The marijuana packages were smuggled from PNG into the eastern Indonesian province of Papua, he remarked, adding that the police officers could apprehend the suspects owing to a tip-off from residents.
2. Indonesia's Sri Mulyani Meets Singapore President, Discusses World Economic and Financial Challenges
Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati traveled to Singapore to meet Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Both exchanged ideas about the latest world economic and financial challenges.
“I have the precious and extraordinary opportunity to be able to exchange ideas with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam,” she said in a post on her Instagram account @smindrawati on Saturday, July 20, 2024.
Sri Mulyani said it was an honor for her to sit directly and discuss with Tharman. “Exchanging ideas and discussing various world economic and financial challenges, as well as the current and future challenges of world multilateral cooperation in the current dynamic and very challenging geopolitical situation.”
3. Indonesia's Illegal Import Task Force Comprises 11 Ministries, Institutions
Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan, known as Zulhas, said the ministry had formed a task force to monitor the import of certain goods entering Indonesia. The minister claimed the task force was formed as illegal imports affected local companies and resulted in mass layoffs.
"The task force monitors certain goods included in the import trade system,” said Zulhas on Friday, July 19, 2024.
Zulhas said the task force was formed based on Article 38 (1) of Trade Law Number 7 of 2014 which provided that the government regulates citizens' trade activities through export and import policies. Meanwhile, according to Government Regulation Number 29 of 2021, a minister is authorized to supervise national trade operations.
