823 Indonesians Fell Victim to Dubai Online Scam Network

17 July 2024 11:25 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) said 823 Indonesians became victims of online fraud between 2022 and 2024. The scammers, part of an international online scam operating out of Dubai, lured victims by offering fake part-time jobs.

"The total loss is Rp59 billion," said Bareskim's cybercrime director. Brig. Gen. Himawan Bayu Aji, said in Jakarta on July 16.

The scammers offer fake part-time jobs via Telegram and WhatsApp. Police have named three new suspects in the case, a foreign citizen with the initials ZS and two Indonesian citizens with the initials M and H.

ZS is suspected of being the coordinator of the operators in Indonesia. Meanwhile, M plays the role of a person who recruits Indonesian citizens to work as scammers by offering them jobs as computer operators in Dubai. In reality, the Indonesians were hired as scammers.

The police recorded that 17 Indonesian citizens have also become victims of the crime of human trafficking (TPPO) in this case.
