Erick Thohir: Indonesia's Football Remains Under FIFA Scrutiny

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairman Erick Thohir asserted that the country’s ongoing football transformation efforts, which were aimed at building a better sporting climate, are still under FIFA’s supervision. 

He made the statement to emphasize the continued ban on away supporters attending the 2024 President's Cup pre-season tournament on July 19-August 4.

“Indonesia is still in a two-year transformation period [mandated by FIFA] following the Kanjuruhan tragedy (October 2022), so the prohibition aims to avoid FIFA sanctions,” Erick said at the 2024 Presidential Cup press conference at SCTV Tower, Jakarta, on Monday, July 15.

He added that this ban on away supporters adheres to the agreed-upon measures with FIFA, PSSI, and the government.

FIFA has specifically mandated a registration system for all football supporters to help authorities identify and hold accountable individuals who disrupt matches or tarnish the image of Indonesian football.

The former President of the Inter Milan Club emphasized the importance of public understanding regarding the current ban, which he deemed as a crucial step towards a reformed Indonesian football landscape with improved management practices.

The 2024 President's Cup

The 2024 President's Cup kicks off on July 19 at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in West Java and concludes on August 4 in Solo. Participating teams include Persib Bandung, Borneo FC, Persis Solo, PSM Makassar, Arema FC, Bali United, Madura United, and Persija Jakarta.

The tournament schedule is as follows:

1. Group Stage: July 19 - 26

2. Semi-finals: July 30 and 31

3. Third Place Match: August 3

4. Final: August 4
