TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotedjo said Indonesia has achieved its 2024 Paris Olympics target. The Indonesian contingent clinched one bronze in badminton and two gold in sport climbing and weightlifting.
"We have figured that badminton, sport climbing, and weightlifting are potential," said Dito when welcoming the return of gold-winning athletes Veddriq Leonardo and Rizki Juniansyah at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tuesday evening, August 13, 2024.
Minister Dito said both athletes will be given a Rp6 billion bonus each, as President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo instructed. “President Jokowi met me in Nusantara Capital City (IKN) and said the bonus for clinching gold medals is Rp6 billion,” said Dito.
This year's bonus for Olympic winners is bigger than the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 with Rp5.5 billion.
Veddriq and Rizki arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport along with several fellow Olympians, two sport climbers Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi and Rajiah Sallsabillah, and two lifters Rahmad Adi Mulyono and Nurul Akmal.
The athletes were accompanied by Indonesia’s Olympic contingent’s Chef de Mission (CdM) Anindya Bakrie. They were welcomed by Dito Ariotedjo and International Olympic Committee Member (IOC Member) Erick Thohir.
Rizki and Veddriq represented Indonesia at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Rizki, Indonesia’s first weightlifter to win gold at the Olympics, was appointed as the country’s flag bearer.
Joining the closing parade was Veddriq and several others, including fellow athletes Nurul Akmal, Rahmad Adi Mulyono, Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi, and Rajiah Sallsabillah.
IOC Member Erick Thohir expressed his appreciation to Indonesian athletes while welcoming them at Soekarno-Hatta Airport. He said this achievement must motivate other sports branches to achieve medals at the next Olympic Games.
"All sports stakeholders must unite to prepare for this," said Erick. "Hopefully we’re not feeling satisfied with two gold and swiftly prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics for more medals.”
