TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Traveling around the world is a cherished aspiration for many individuals, as it proffers an indelible experience, from witnessing the natural beauty and culture of the nation to the rich customs and traditions ingrained in the local community.
When planning a trip to a foreign land, factors such as cost and choice of tourist destinations are undoubtedly important. However, the paramount concern should be the safety of the region, which guarantees a delightful trip from the moment of arrival until the return journey.
The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) analyzed the peace level of 163 countries which represent 99.7 percent of the world’s population. The findings were published in a report titled Global Peace Index 2023. The study used 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators to measure the state of peace in three domains: the level of societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict; and the degree of militarization.
Here is the list of the top ten least peaceful countries in the world based on the Global Peace Index 2023:
1. Afghanistan
Afghanistan has a peace index score of 3.448 in 2023, down from 3,554 the previous year. Following the Taliban's seizure of power in August 2021, the country has been plagued by instability, threats of terrorism, and widespread violence.
2. Yemen
Yemen is presently grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis. Over six years of war have displaced 4.3 million people, and some 14 million are suffering from hunger and disease. Yemen's Peace Index score is 3.35.
3. Syria
The ongoing civil war in Syria has created a complex situation since 2011. The ceasefire has reduced buildings and roads to rubble. With a score of 3.221, Syrian citizens struggle with a lack of clean water, food, education, and health services.
4. South Sudan
Since 2011, South Sudan has decided to separate itself from Sudan. Consequently, the country in the Sub-Saharan Africa region is grappling with various difficult challenges, including economic problems. The IEP noted South Sudan’s peace index score at 3.214.
5. Democratic Republic of the Congo
With a peace index score of 3,214, the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the least peaceful countries in the world. Political unrest and poverty are a daily occurrence for local residents, leading to rampant crimes such as robbery, kidnapping, rape, and murder.
6. Russia
Russia is considered a perilous nation due to its conflict with Ukraine. Its peace index score was at 3.142. Due to its invasion of Ukraine, the country led by President Vladimir Putin received sanctions in the form of a trade embargo. Russian citizens also find it difficult to buy or sell goods to other countries.
7. Ukraine
The Russian invasion in February 2022 forced millions of people to flee Ukraine. The impact of the war also spread throughout the world, particularly affecting the food availability and energy supplies. As a result of this political instability, Ukraine’s peace index score is at 3.043.
8. Somalia
Somalia has been beset by civil war for years, resulting in a Peace Index score of 3.036. The Al-Shabaab group, which is linked to Al-Qaeda, has not hesitated to attack civilians in Somalia. In addition, maritime piracy, poverty, hunger, and a weak government exacerbate the situation.
9. Sudan
Sudan has experienced various internal problems, including coups and changes in leadership. Reports of human rights abuses, unemployment, and inflation contribute to the country's high Peace Index score of 3.023.
10. Iraq
Iraq is one of the least peaceful countries in the world, with a peace index score of 3.006. A combination of political, social, and historical factors, including the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, the Gulf War in the early 1990s, and the United States invasion in 2003, have caused widespread damage to Iraq.
