TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said that Indonesia and China had agreed to form a team handling the development of the Jakarta-Surabaya high-speed train project, an extension of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train.
"We have agreed to form a team for the Jakarta-Surabaya high-speed train development," he said in a video upload on his Instagram account, quoted Monday, April 22, 2024.
The agreement is one of the results of the 4th High-Level Dialogue and Cooperation Mechanism or HDCM RI-PRC Meeting in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara on April 19, 2024. Luhut led the Indonesian delegation, while the Chinese delegation was led by its Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi. The meeting discussed several agendas including the Jakarta-Surabaya high-speed train.
Luhut said that the high-speed train development should consider involving China due to its experience in handling the 142.3-kilometer project for the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train. According to him, China is the country that has the greatest potential compared to other countries in this project.
With China's experience, Luhut is optimistic that the cost of this project will be cheaper. He has also emphasized that the government will cut corners to carry out this project since the domestic downstream means Indonesia needs fewer imported materials. By partnering with China, he said, the government could resume the previous working system for the development of the Jakarta-Surabaya high-speed train without adjustments.
