Apple CEO Tim Cook Meets with Indonesia President-elect Prabowo after Jokowi

17 April 2024 19:43 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple's Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook held a meeting with Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto at the ministry’s office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, April 17. “Thank you, it is an honor to meet you,” Prabowo said, as quoted from today’s official release.

The meeting took place at around 12:45 WIB (Western Indonesia Time) and concluded at 13:50 WIB. Cook was joined by Apple's Vice President for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives Lisa Jackson, Head of Global Government Affairs Nick Amma, Head of Government Affairs APAC Elizabeth Hernandez, and Government Affairs for SEA Mirza Natadisastra.

The tech industry tycoon and the President-elect of Indonesia discussed the potential for mutual collaboration between Apple and the Indonesian government. In an official letter delivered to Prabowo on March 21, Cook expressed his appreciation for the opening of three Apple Developer Academies in Surabaya, Jakarta, and Batam.

Cook also pledged his commitment to bolstering skills development and innovation, as evidenced by the exceptional quality of the nearly 2,000 graduates to date.

Prior to his meeting with Prabowo, the Microsoft co-founder met with Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at the Jakarta Presidential Palace. The meeting was also attended by the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of Communication and Information Budi Arie, and Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasmita.

Budi Arie mentioned that Tim Cook, who perceived Indonesia as an intriguing and potential country for Apple, emphasized the investment prospects and the academies.

The Indonesian government also welcomed Apple's discussions and good intentions to invest in Indonesia. Prabowo hoped that Apple's investment could be realized well and on time.
