TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian government urges the UN Security Council to take immediate action to reduce tensions in the Middle East and the conflict between Iran and Israel. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, April 14, said that Indonesia is deeply concerned over the escalation of the situation in the Middle East and calls on all parties to exercise restraint.

“Indonesia urges the UN Security Council to act immediately to de-escalate tensions and continue working towards lasting peace in the Middle East, including by ending the illegal occupation of Palestine and various violations of international law by Israel,” the ministry wrote on social media X.

The ministry reiterated its call for a two-state solution as “a just settlement” to the Palestinian issue, which is the key to creating stability and security in the region.

Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles toward Israel on Saturday evening, April 13 in response to a suspected Israeli strike on its embassy compound in Damascus, Syria on April 1 that killed top Revolutionary Guards commanders.

Amid the escalating conflict, the Indonesian embassies in Tehran and Amman have appealed to Indonesian citizens living in Iran and Israel to be vigilant. There are 376 Indonesian citizens residing in Iran, most of them students in the city of Qom, according to the embassy in Tehran. Meanwhile, the embassy in Amman noted that there are 115 Indonesian citizens living in Israel, most of them in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Arava.

Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens and BHI at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, confirmed that the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran has prepared a contingency plan to anticipate an escalation of the situation in Iran.
