TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Transportation spokesperson Adita Irawati said there were 3,289,330 motorbikes and 6,578,660 people leaving and entering Greater Jakarta on Sunday, March 7, 2024, three days before Eid al-Fitr Day. This figure decreased by 13.98 percent compared to the cumulative movement of people and private vehicles (motorbikes) in 2023.
Of the 3.2 million, the number of motorbikes leaving Greater Jakarta was 1,794,599 and 3,589,198 people. This number has increased by 89.17 percent compared to the normal daily period in 2024.
As many as 1,494,731 motorbikes and 2,989,462 people entered Greater Jakarta. This number has increased by 12.49 percent compared to the normal daily period in 2024.
Meanwhile, some 929,692 cars and 4,648,460 people entered and left Greater Jakarta. This figure is based on vehicles passing on toll roads managed by Jasamarga. This figure has increased by 271.52 percent compared to the normal daily period in 2024.
The increase in the number of vehicles entering and leaving Greater Jakarta has resulted in traffic buildup, as happened at the Merak Ferry Port, Cilegon. A long queue of vehicles heading to Merak Harbor reached a radius of 1 kilometer before the Merak Tollgate on Saturday.
Banten Regional Police Traffic Director Police Commissioner Leganek Mawardi said one of the reasons for the traffic in Merak Harbor was the increasing volume of vehicles heading to Sumatra Island using ferry services. However, according to Adita, the Ministry has tried to unravel the traffic in collaboration with the Police.
"The Transportation Ministry with the Traffic Departement of the National Police have implemented an opening and closing traffic system and diversion to Ciwandan Port," said Adita in a written statement on Monday.
