Observer: Anies Baswedan Has a Shot of Getting PKS Support in Jakarta Gubernatorial Election

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of observers say that Anies Baswedan has a good chance of being nominated again to run for governor of Jakarta. One political observer, Ujang Komarudin, said that Anies would most likely be promoted by the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), just like in the 2017 Jakarta regional election.
"Because Anies helped PKS to get a high number of votes in Jakarta," he said on Tuesday, March 5.
According to Ujang, Anies' return to the Jakarta gubernatorial race will make the regional competition more lively, especially if Golkar deputy chairman Ridwan Kamil is serious about running.
Contacted separately, Populi Center senior researcher Usep Saepul Ahyar said that in addition to giving the party a massive electoral boost, efforts to promote Anies would make PKS even more solid with its voter base in Jakarta. "Because it is between Anies and PKS, I see that there are strong nuances of Islamic politics," he said.
The road to endorsing Anies will not be easy for PKS, however, as other parties may also be eyeing the former Jakarta governor. "It is possible that NasDem will support Anies again. Or maybe Anies will decide not to run in the regional election," Usep said.
However, Usep said the PKS still had other options in case Anies refused to run and was nominated for the Jakarta gubernatorial election. "There are three names from within the PKS that I think are very worthy of going forward, namely Mardani Ali Sera, Hidayat Nur Wahid, and PKS Chairman General Ahmad Syaikhu," he said.
PKS spokesman Ahmad Mabruri said the party was still in communication with Anies to this day, especially regarding the vote-counting process for the 2024 general election.
"Regarding Anies and the regional elections, we will wait until the results of the presidential election are final. There is still a lot of work to be done here," Mabruri said.
