TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo Ministry) has summoned representatives from the social media giant platform X to discuss stricter content regulation measures. Platform X has acknowledged the summons and is reportedly coordinating a suitable time to discuss the matter in Indonesia.
Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, the Director General of Informatics Applications at the ministry, confirmed the summoning, expressing concerns over the recurrent appearance of online gambling content, despite previous warnings to the platform.
The issue resurfaced with advertisements featuring a well-known public figure promoting online gambling, sparking outrage among netizens and prompting immediate action from the ministry.
The ministry seeks to implement a more proactive approach to content regulation, urging the platform to develop advanced technology or algorithms capable of detecting and automatically handling gambling-related content without requiring repeated manual notifications.
Semmy said the usual move is to issue notices to remove offensive content. “We notify them to take down, but if it's repeated, it's tiring, so we ask them to develop (automated procedures) so that if similar content is found, we don't need to ask them again, and the content is automatically removed," Semmy said.
The upcoming discussions between the Indonesian authorities and Platform X are expected to pave the way for stronger measures against online gambling content, ensuring a safer digital environment for users.
A recent survey found that around 82 percent of Indonesian internet users have been exposed to online gambling content. Out of those, 63 percent see online ads in similar veins every time they surf the internet.
