TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo Ministry) warned the management of the social media platform X to respond to citizen complaints about the staggering amount of online gambling ads on the platform. The letter, numbered R-09/M.KOMINFO/AI.05.02/01/2024, warned X Corp to eradicate online gambling ads.
"All parties receive the same treatment from Kominfo Ministry if they contain online gambling ads or content such as in platform X," said Kominfo Minister Budi Arie Setiadi on Tuesday, Jan. 9 in Jakarta.
According to minister Budi, Kominfo has also warned Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, about the same complaint. At the time, he said, Kominfo reminded Meta management in Indonesia to immediately cleanse the platform of online gambling content.
"The Kominfo Ministry is committed to eradicate online gambling content under the existing law. It must be eradicated since it affected the people negatively," he said.
Kominfo has successfully blocked more than 805,923 online gambling content from July 17 to December 30, 2023. The content includes IP, application, and shared files.
According to Budi Arie, this achievement is comparable to the government's achievements for the past five years. Kominfo Ministry has also successfully blocked over 5,000 bank accounts and e-wallet accounts allegedly used in online gambling transactions, the minister claimed.
