Govt to Summon TikTok This Week Over Social Commerce Ban Compliance

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Trade plans to summon TikTok this week to ensure the platform still complies with the Trade Minister Regulation No. 31 of 2023 on e-commerce.
“Yes, indeed, TikTok will be summoned to review its compliance,” said the Domestic Trade DG Isy Karim on Monday.
Article 21 (3) of the e-commerce regulation stressed the prohibition of social media to facilitate transactions on its system, which is currently being reviewed regarding TikTok Shop’s migration to Tokopedia. The Trade Ministry ensures that the migration process will be fully supervised.
Vice Minister of Trade Jerry Sambuaga said that the government aims to guarantee that both TikTok and Tokopedia comply with the regulation during its migration period. He also stressed that both platforms must synchronize to ensure compliance.
Despite the amount of time it takes to migrate TikTok Shop, Jerry said technical aspects of the migration must be synced, including payment and the transaction process. “We want to ensure no provisions in the Trade Minister Regulation No. 31 of 2023 are violated,” he said.
Earlier, the Minister of Cooperatives and Small-Medium-Enterprises Teten Masduki highlighted on Feb. 19, 2024, that TikTok still violated the regulation despite the inter-ministries technical coordination.
According to Teten, TikTok Shop has merged its social media with the digital market platform in one application, violating the provisions stipulating a clear separation of both platforms.
TikTok Shop was previously closed down on October 4, 2023, due to permit issues, and resumed operation on Dec. 12, 2023, after a Rp23 trillion investment to PT Gojek Tokopedia or GoTo.
