TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) has recommended a re-vote in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, following a ballot tampering incident.

At a press conference here on Wednesday, Bawaslu chairperson Rahmat Bagja announced that ballots that have been punched and collected from posts and mobile ballot boxes in Kuala Lumpur will not be counted.

"They will not be counted and the (voting) process shall be repeated with the post and mobile ballot boxes," he informed.

Bagja said that an incident where a number of ballots were tampered with in Kuala Lumpur was found to be true, which led Bawaslu to recommend a re-vote.

"Because there are many violations in the postal and mobile ballot box method in Kuala Lumpur," he added.

Bawaslu has recommended that voting be conducted in Kuala Lumpur again by updating the list of voters first, especially those choosing to cast their vote through the post and mobile ballot box method.

Voters who are registered to vote at polling stations (TPS) must not be included in the post and mobile ballot box method to avoid repeat voting.

Bawaslu has also advised the Kuala Lumpur Overseas Election Committee (PPLN) to look for methods other than postal voting to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

Meanwhile, the General Elections Commission (KPU) has sent a team to scrutinize the ballot papers cast unlawfully in Malaysia.

In accordance with KPU Regulation No. 3 of 2022, the national vote recapitulation for the General Election is scheduled to take place from February 15 to March 20, 2024.

A total of 204,807,222 voters nationwide cast their vote to elect the president, vice president, and members of the House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Representatives Council (DPD), and Regional Legislative Councils (DPRD) at the province, city, and district levels.

Eighteen political parties and six Aceh local parties contested in the general elections this year.
