TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia was knocked out of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 after losing 0-4 to Australia in the Round of 16 on Sunday, January 28, 2024. Nevertheless, the Garuda squad set three new records in the quadrennial event.
Tempo summarizes the new records set by the Indonesian national team during the competition which was held in Qatar, as follows:
1. Reaching the knockout stage
Indonesia qualified for the knockout round for the first time since its inaugural participation in the tournament, finishing as one of the four best third-placed teams in the group stage.
In the four previous editions, Indonesia always failed to progress beyond the group stage. They were able to qualify for the knockout round thanks to the 1-1 draw between Kyrgyzstan and Oman in Group F.
2. Goals scored in every group stage match
The second new record set by Shin Tae-yong's young squad was for scoring goals in every match in the group stage. In the three matches played, the national team managed to break through their opponents' defenses, even if they did not always win.
Goals were scored by Marselino Ferdinan, Asnawi Mangkualam, and Sandy Walsh.
3. Marselino Ferdinan is declared as youngest goalscorer in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023
Another new record was attributed to Marselino Ferdinan for becoming the youngest goalscorer of the tournament. The attacking midfielder from the KMSK Deinze got his name on the scoreboard in the team's 1-3 loss to Iraq in their opening Group D match.
The 19-year-old player performed brilliantly throughout the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, catching a lot of attention. Many football agents and the Australian national team's coach, Graham Arnold, praised Marselino's football skills.
