TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Institute for Essential Services Reform or IESR projected that the energy sector will potentially create millions of new job opportunities.
"Around 3.2 million new job opportunities," said the Program Manager of Energy Transformation Deon Arinaldo in a discussion in Bekasi, West Java on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.
Deon Arinaldo added that the projected number has not included the potential hiring of other sectors indirectly contributed to the renewable energy sector.
However, Deon from IESR also estimated the loss of around 1.3 million of fossil-based energy-related jobs.
"So, there will be 3.2 million jobs created, but for now, around 1.3 million jobs in fossil energy, oil and gas, coal, and their supporting sectors are disrupted," he said.
Workers in fossil-based energy also will not automatically gain new employment for jobs in the renewable energy sectors. Therefore, Deon emphasized that energy transition must be conducted justly to anticipate the potential loss of employment it caused.
