TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted on Friday with 500-meter ash columns, visible to the residents of Agam Regency and Bukittinggi City.
"An eruption occurred at 10:14 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time) with 500 meters of ash columns at 3,392 meters above sea level," said the Volcano Observer officer Teguh Purnomo as quoted by Antara on Friday.
He explained that the thick grey ash columns were leaning towards the southwest. "The eruption was recorded with a maximum amplitude of 6.1 millimeters and a temporary duration of 1 minute 2 seconds," he said.
One of the residents in Bukittinggi, Rizal Hatta, aged 36, said the eruption did not produce any sound but the ash column was clearly visible from the Marapi peak.
"There was no earthquake-like vibration either, but the [ash column] is visible, most likely heading to Padang Panjang City," he said.
This was the 132nd eruption since December 2023. In detail, Mount Marapi erupted 24 times in January and 108 times in December.
As of now, Mount Marapi is at an alert level, and people are urged to stay 4.5-kilometer away from the crater.
