5M Earthquake Jolts West Halmahera's Jailolo; BMKG Warns of Aftershocks

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that an earthquake rocked Jailolo in West Halmahera, North Maluku, on Wednesday, January 17, at 01:03 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The quake was measured at a magnitude of 5 on the Richter scale.
Based on the agency's official website monitored in Jakarta, the quake's epicenter was detected in the sea, about 125 kilometers northwest of Jailolo. It was precisely at 1.41 degrees north latitude and 126.39 degrees east longitude with a depth of 22 kilometers.
The shaking was felt in Bitung and Ternate at the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) level II. This means it is felt only by a few people at rest, especially on the upper floors of buildings, and delicately suspended objects may swing.
BMKG appealed to people in the affected areas to stay vigilant for possible aftershocks.
