Over 1 Million Lightning Strikes Hit Indonesia's Gorontalo Province Last Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Gorontalo Geophysics Station Technical Implementation Unit of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, recorded that the Gorontalo Province was hit by 1,021,489 lightning strikes throughout last year, as observed by the lightning detection system Nexstorm.
"The highest number of strikes occurred in December 2023 with 267,975 times, while the lowest number of strikes occurred in August 2023 with 884 times," Andri Wijaya Field, head of the Gorontalo Geophysics Station, said on Thursday, January 4.
Haura Dhiya Amaninida, the operational officer at the Gorontalo Geophysics Station, provides seven tips for avoiding lightning.
- Stay indoors if there is lightning or hear the sound of thunder.
- When swimming, immediately get out and stay away from the pool.
- Avoid taking shelter under trees.
- Stay away from electric poles, towers, or anything tall that is easily struck by lightning.
- Don't be in rice fields, parks, or fields.
- When riding a motorcycle, stop immediately and seek shelter.
- When sheltering from rain outdoors near other people, keep a distance between 3 and 5 meters to avoid being hit by energy when there is lightning.
