TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Banda Aceh City Police named two more suspects in the smuggling of Rohingya refugees to the coast of Aceh Besar. The police have previously detained one person already for the same case.
The two new suspects are MAH, 22 years old, a Bangladeshi, and HB, 53, born in Myanmar. The Banda Aceh Police's head of criminal and criminal investigation unit Comr. Fadillah Aditya Pratama said as reported by Antara, December 27.
Previously, the police named MA, 35, a Myanmar citizen of Rohingya ethnicity, as a suspect in the crime of smuggling 137 people to Indonesia. MA is a resident of Camp 1 Block H-88 Kutupalum, which is a Rohingya Ethnic Shelter in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.
The three suspects were among the 137 people who landed on the coast of Lamreh Village, Mesjid Raya District, Aceh Besar on December 10. They are now staying in the underground parking lot of Balai Meuseuraya Aceh (BMA) in Banda Aceh.
The police strongly believe that MAH and HB helped MA to smuggle the Rohingyas from Bangladesh to Indonesia.
Previously, East Aceh Police investigators also named three Rohingya immigrants as suspects of people smuggling. They are Sajul Islam, 41, acting as the boat skipper; Rubis Ahmad, 42, the assistant captain; and M Amin, 42, the ship's engine operator.
East Aceh Police Chief Adj. Comr. Andy Rahmansyah said on December 22 that the three suspects were among the 50 Rohingyas who landed in the coastal area of Seuneubok Baroh Village on December 14.
He said that the illegal immigrants ran away from refugee camps in Bangladesh. They had to pay 300,000 taka or around Rp42 million to get on the boat sailing to Indonesia.
