1. Morowali Smelter Fire: Worker's Safety More Important Than Investor's Interest, Says Observer
An energy economics observer from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Fahmy Radhi responded to the smelter furnace fire at PT Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) in Morowali, Southeast Sulawesi. The fire occurred on Sunday, Dec. 24, 2023, at around 05:30 local time.
According to Fahmy, the incident was proof that the smelter's investors had been neglectful of mining safety standards. "There is an indication that the government considers investor's interest more important than worker's safety," he said in a statement on Monday.
2. Morowali Smelter Furnace Explosion Death Toll Increases by 5
Five more victims lost their lives in the explosion of a smelter furnace owned by PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel. This brings the total number of fatalities to 18, consisting of eight foreign workers and 10 local workers.
Morowali Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Suprianto said that the five victims had undergone intensive treatment at the Morowali Regional General Hospital (RSUD). Unfortunately, their lives could not be saved.
3. More Than 36,000 People Visit Monas on Christmas Holiday
The number of visitors to the National Monument or Monas on Monday during the Christmas holidays reached 36,713 people. According to the head of the management unit of the Monas area, Muhammad Isa Sarnuri, that was the number of visitors from 06:00 to 18:00 on Christmas Day.
"The number of Monas visits from 06:00 to 18:00 was 36,713 people," Isa said in a written statement, Monday, December 25.
