TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The inactive chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Firli Bahuri, announced his resignation on Thursday, Dec. 21, claiming to have submitted the letter to President Joko Widodo or Jokowi through the State Secretary. Firli has served as the leader of the country’s anti-graft agency for four years, from 2019 to 2023.
“I have performed my duties as a KPK employee for the period 2019-2023, from December 20, 2019, to December 20, 2023. I have completed my duties as KPK Chairman. And I have decided to quit. I also have no intention to extend my term of office,” Firli said at the KPK’s ACLC Building in Kuningan, South Jakarta on Thursday, Dec. 21.
Firli thanked the President for the opportunity to lead the agency for four years, and to the entire community. He said it was not easy to lead the KPK for four years.
“In order to maintain national stability, protect public interests, succeed in the presidential election and the party of democracy in 2024, I emphasize that I am ending my duties,” he said.
The former police inspector general also apologized to Jokowi for not completing the remainder of his extended term, which ends on Dec. 20, 2024.
On Wednesday, Dec. 20, Presidential Special Staff Coordinator, Ari Dwipayana, confirmed that the President extended the term of office of the KPK leaders from four years to five years following the Constitutional Court's Decision Number 112/PUU-XX/2022 dated May 25, 2023.
On Thursday, the KPK Deputy Chairman Alexander Marwata said the Presidential Decree (Keppres) on the extended office term was issued about two weeks ago.
As widely reported, Firli Bahuri is currently under investigation by the KPK Supervisory Board (Dewas) for ethics violations. The Jakarta Metro Police have also named him as a suspect in the alleged extortion case against former agriculture minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo.
