TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hiking activity to Mount Rinjani will be closed for three months from January to March next year, a routine action taken each year considering the unfriendly weather during this period of the year.
The head of Mount Rinjani National Park office Dedy Asriady reminded hikers to obey this policy. "For the safety of the hikers, please do not hike," he said on Wednesday, Dec. 20.
Dedy explained that the weather forecast from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Mataram reported that the beginning of the year will be a transitional period to the rainy season. The closing down of Mount Rinjani is also intended to recover its ecosystem.
Hikers who checked in on Dec. 31 to hike Mount Rinjani are obliged to immediately check out on the 3rd of January 2024. "Beware of hydrometeorological disasters," BMKG announced.
Unfriendly weather could potentially cause sudden downpours, strong winds, flooding, landslides, and tornados.
Despite closing down the hiking activity, visitors of Mount Rinjani are still allowed to enjoy other non-hiking attractions at the national park.
Mount Rinjani is one of the most sought-after hiking destinations in Indonesia. Data showed that from April to November this year, 119,260 hikers visited Mount Rinjani with 33,318 foreign hikers and 85,942 domestic hikers.
