OJK to Summon Meta and Google to Help Combat Illegal Online Loans

12 December 2023 19:14 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Financial Services Authority (OJK) stated that it planned to call in global tech giants Meta and Google related to the fight against illegal online loans. Sarjito, the OJK's Deputy Commissioner for Consumer Protection, said Google had shut down 17 applications as they were deemed dangerous and stole personal data.

“We will follow up on this again by inviting Meta and Google along with Kominfo (the Ministry of Communication and Information),” Sarjito said in the Thamrin area, Central Jakarta on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

In an effort to curb advertisements related to illegal online lending, he explained that the government would ask the two global companies to assist in the fight against these practices. He also recalled that the OJK had met with representatives from Google and Meta at the OJK headquarters four or five months ago.

“We don't want to just block [content of illegal online loans]. If possible, we will hunt them down,” Sarjito stressed.

The OJK is also waiting for the government to issue more affirmative regulations to suppress perpetrators who advertise illegal online loans.

With the Christmas and New Year holidays fast approaching, Sarjito predicted that the use of online loans would increase. “Let alone the illegal ones,” said the chairman of the Task Force for the Eradication of Illegal Financial Activities (PASTI).

The OJK has not yet recorded the percentage increase in legal and illegal online loans ahead of the year-end holidays. However, Sarjito assessed that rising public consumption would increase the demand for loans through online platforms.
