TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar claimed that Indonesia has taken concrete steps to tackle climate change.
"We are no longer acting like other countries with their mere commitment and ambitions," she said during a visit to the Indonesian Pavilion at COP28 in Dubai, UAE, on Wednesday, Nov. 29.
According to the minister, other countries reduced GHG emissions by 43 percent on average while Indonesia managed to reduce emissions by 52 percent in 2020, then 43 percent in 2021, and 42 percent in 2022.
"Indonesia is actually included in the list of countries managing to ambitiously reduce GHG emissions," she added.
However, despite the significant level of emissions reduction, the government is still working hard to keep suppressing emissions from the coastline ecosystem, Minister Siti Nurbaya said. The ecosystem includes mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs.
Additionally, the ministry also stated that the farming sector also contributed to emissions due to livestock secretions and plowing agricultural lands.
"For now, we are targeting [emissions reduction] this year for 43.2 percent. Next year, based on our calculation, the target will surely surpass 43.2 percent," she concluded.
