TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the world football's governing body FIFA, Gianni Infantino, expressed his gratitude to Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi and General Chair of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir for their support in hosting the U-17 World Cup 2023.
“Indonesia is set to stage the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2023 in two days' time, and I want to wholeheartedly thank the host nation's President, Joko Widodo, and @pssi President Erick Thohir for their support to @fifa in the lead up to this historic event!” Infantino said on his Instagram account on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023.
Indonesia is ready to host the international youth tournament in four stadiums across the archipelago, with the opening ceremony being held at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya on Friday, Nov. 10, 2023.
The four stadiums are Jakarta International Stadium in Jakarta, Si Jalan Harupat Stadium in Bandung, Manahan Stadium in Solo, and Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya.
A total of 24 participating countries will start their journey in the group stage, which is divided into six groups (A-F). This biennial event marks the first time Indonesia has hosted a FIFA tournament.
“Good luck to all the participating teams and I hope you make the best use of this global platform to bring people together in celebration between 10 November and 2 December 2023,” Infantino added.
During his visit to Indonesia, the 53-year-old man was due to meet Thohir today, Nov. 9, to review Indonesia's final preparations as the host nation and President Jokowi on the following day, Nov. 10.
“The FIFA President is here (in Indonesia) for one day, on Nov. 9, and will fly again on Nov. 10. But the FIFA President plans to come back for the closing ceremony and said he will stay longer. We'll see,” Thohir said at the press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
The PSSI chairman also announced that Indonesian women's national team player, Sabreena Dressler, and Belgian player of Indonesian descent, Radja Nainggolan, will become ambassadors for the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2023.
