TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) confirmed that the Argo Semeru train serving Surabaya Gubeng-Gambir route and the Argo Wilis train serving Bandung-Surabaya Gubeng route derailed at 13:15 local time today, Oct. 17. The accident occurred at KM 520+4 between Sentolo Station and Wates Station in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta.
“KAI is trying to evacuate passengers on the two trains,” KAI’s EVP of Corporate Secretary, Raden Agus Dwinanto Budiadji, said in a statement on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
The accident has been in the public spotlight and a trending topic on social media X, formerly Twitter. Circulating videos show several train cars derailing and coming off the tracks. Passengers were seen around the trains.
Other videos display the front of the Argo Wilis train being scratched and dented. It was suspected that the Argo Wilis train crashed a series of Argo Semeru train cars that had overturned on the curved track. The ambulance and a group of medical teams arrived and began the evacuation process.
PT KAI confirmed that the accident resulted in delays to other trains passing through the route. PT KAI also apologized for the inconvenience. Until now, the company has not yet provided information about the victims.
Tempo was trying to reach KAI’s VP of Public Relations Joni Martinus, but did not receive an immediate response thus far.
